THE VINE
Of Middle Eastern origin, it is believed to have been introduced to southern France in the 13th century. Its presence in Italy dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, indicated by the ampelographer Acerbi as Grosse Serine or Hermitage, while its presence in Sicily is witnessed in 1868 by Baron Mendola who describes it in his catalog simply as Syrah. Despite now being considered an international grape variety, Syrah has found the ideal habitat in the Sicilian lands in which to express itself at its best.
